The black rook snail Melanoides maculata is an uncomplicated and robust freshwater snail that is a visual asset in almost every aquarium due to its beautiful dark to black coloring. These are our own breedings.
Its biological advantages are obvious and we use them especially when setting up new tanks: this small ramshorn snail burrows into the soil and ensures that no areas of rot develop. At the same time, the snail's excretions are ideal fertilizer for the roots of other aquatic plants.
Size for sale: Animals for sale have a minimum size of 1 cm without any damage to their shell.
General information on keeping and breeding: This type of snail can generally be kept with all aquarium inhabitants that do not have snails on their menu (such as puffer fish). Because it is so undemanding, it can be kept at temperatures of 18 - 30 °C. It digs through the bottom of the tank, but leaves the roots and leaves of the plants alone. As these animals are hermaphrodites, they reproduce more or less on their own. In order to avoid overpopulation, it is therefore advisable not to feed the animals specifically; the excretions of other aquarium inhabitants or algae growth are sufficient for this in established tanks. Some specimens reach a size of over 3 cm.
